The History of Banneux

Mariette Beco

Mariette Beco was born on March 25, 1921. She is the eldest of seven children. The family lived in difficult circumstances and resided in a modest, isolated worker's cottage, set away from the road, outside the village of Banneux, opposite a large coniferous forest.

The Spring

On the evening of Sunday, January 15, 1933, the Virgin Mary appeared for the first time in the garden of the small house. She called Mariette to her with a gesture. On Wednesday, January 18, at 7 p.m., Mariette was in the garden praying on her knees. Mariette left the garden and went to the road where the Lady called her. Twice on the path she fell to her knees. A third time she knelt in the ditch before a "puddle" of water from a spring. The Lady said to her: "Wash your hands in the water". This spring is visible and accessible at the sanctuary site.

The Apparitions

Mother of the Poor (January 19, 1933): The Virgin appears and answers Mariette: "I am the Mother of the Poor". She leads the child to the spring and reveals: "This spring is destined for all nations... to ease the suffering of the sick."

The Request for a Chapel (January 20, 1933): The smiling Virgin answers: "I wish for a small chapel." She spreads her hands and blesses the child with her right hand.

The Relief (February 11, 1933): The Virgin speaks of "easing suffering". Mariette does not understand the word "ease" but knows it is something good.

The Sign (February 15, 1933): The Virgin answers Abbé Jamin's request: "Believe in me, I will believe in you." She entrusts Mariette with a secret.

The Farewell (February 20 and March 2, 1933): The apparitions end with the message: "I am the Mother of the Redeemer, Mother of God. Pray often." Before leaving, the Virgin places her hands on Mariette and says: "Farewell."
